Rape and Abuse

There are 55,000 reported cases of rape in South Africa. Some companies in South Africa provide rape insurance. In other arts of Africa, especially Eastern and Sub-Saharan Africa, rape is a way of life. Grandmothers, mothers, daughters, children and even babies are subjected to the most atrocious and emotionally traumatic and physical form of sexual violence against their bodies..

Government agencies, society, families and even the perpetrators of these atrocious crimes are engaged in a culture of silence and complicity. There is little or no repercussions, the victim is left with emotional pain, stigma, and worse a death sentence when she contacts the HIV virus from her perpetrator.

These crimes against humanity and women are fundamentally wrong and demand that we as a global community do something about it. . There must be vigorous investigations, enforcement and prosecution of these criminal perpetrators. Victims should have a rape crisis center where they can be counseled, get medical checkup and obtain anti-retroviral drugs.

The same goes for domestic violence against African women. In a 2005 study by the World Health Organization, 50% of women in Tanzania and another 71% in Ethiopia rural areas were reported beaten by their spouses . The culture of violence and worse silence against human atrocities committed against women in Africa must stop. Mothers and Beyond hope you join us in being a part of the solution.
